Review: Play It Off – Monica Murphy

I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of Play It Off, the second installment in Monica Murphy’s Kings of Campus series, and let me tell you, it was worth the wait! As a huge fan of new adult romances that dance around themes of love, friendship, and a sprinkle of tension, I couldn’t resist diving in. Play It Off captured my heart from the very first page, and I’m so grateful to be part of Monica’s team to share this gem with all of you!

The story centers around Sienna, the sister of Coop and a character who has been quietly nursing a crush on her brother’s charming best friend, Gavin Maddox. Their connection, flickering briefly during her freshman year, left an indelible mark on Sienna, opening the door to countless “what-ifs.” Gavin, on the other hand, is determined to keep his distance, not just out of respect for Coop but because he’s navigating his own pressures as he gears up for his final football season. The push-and-pull dynamic between them is electric, filled with a palpable tension that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Books Worth Reading:

What struck me most about Murphy’s writing was her ability to weave vulnerability into her characters. Sienna often feels overshadowed by her brother’s accomplishments, struggling to find her voice in a world that’s dictated by expectations. Gavin battles with the weight of his father’s discontent, which makes him all the more relatable. Their individual journeys are beautifully intertwined, and the way they lean on each other during their respective challenges adds depth to their relationship.

As for the pacing, the book was such a page-turner that I finished it in one sitting—no small feat! Murphy skillfully mixed moments of blissful romance with chapters brimming with internal conflict, ensuring that there was never a dull moment. The exploration of tropes like best friend’s sister, forbidden love, and secret hookups brought a thrilling twist to their budding romance. The chemistry between Sienna and Gavin was simply electric—one moment you’re holding your breath in anticipation, and the next, you’re grinning from ear to ear.

One line that resonated with me was when Gavin mused about his growing feelings for Sienna, finding himself at the crossroads of friendship and something much deeper. It perfectly encapsulated that yearning, where the heart wrestles with loyalty and desire. Those quiet, reflective moments are what make Play It Off stand out in the genre.

I wholeheartedly recommend Play It Off to anyone who enjoys a steamy, heartfelt romance with a side of sports drama. Fans of books featuring sizzling tension, emotional depth, and characters who feel both flawed and real will find a lot to love here. Murphy’s exploration of love and identity will leave you sighing and rooting for Sienna and Gavin long after you close the book.

This reading experience was not just a getaway into a world of love; it was also a reminder of the complexities of relationships and the beautiful messiness of growing up. So grab your cozy blanket and prepare to lose yourself in this captivating tale—you won’t regret it!
