BOOK  :  HOMEGOING

AUTHOR :  YAA GYASI

PUBLISHED IN : 2016

GENRE :  HISTORICAL FICTION

RATING :  ★★★

SOURCE :  NETGALLEY

GOODREADS SYNOPSIS :

Written with tremendous sweep and power, Homegoing traces the generations of family who follow, as their destinies lead them through two continents and three hundred years of history, each life indelibly drawn, as the legacy of slavery is fully revealed in light of the present day.

Effia and Esi are born into different villages in eighteenth-century Ghana. Effia is married off to an Englishman and lives in comfort in the palatial rooms of Cape Coast Castle. Unbeknownst to Effia, her sister, Esi, is imprisoned beneath her in the castle’s dungeons, sold with thousands of others into the Gold Coast’s booming slave trade, and shipped off to America, where her children and grandchildren will be raised in slavery. One thread of Homegoing follows Effia’s descendants through centuries of warfare in Ghana, as the Fante and Asante nations wrestle with the slave trade and British colonization. The other thread follows Esi and her children into America. From the plantations of the South to the Civil War and the Great Migration, from the coal mines of Pratt City, Alabama, to the jazz clubs and dope houses of twentieth-century Harlem, right up through the present day, Homegoing makes history visceral, and captures, with singular and stunning immediacy, how the memory of captivity came to be inscribed in the soul of a nation.

Books Worth Reading:

Beautiful piece of craft, wondering the genius ;creator beholds.

Plot :
I’m so in love with the concept of this book. The narrative technique.
The way it unraps the story intertwined with one another. Something like this was never read before.
And in depth view of all the sufferings that went through.
I have no words , heads off!

Characters :
An idea of innovation rest in the heart of this writer. The way every single chapter showcased a different life struggle was very thought provoking. It makes me wonder the effort it took to be written.

It eventually makes one believe that every individual has a story to narrate and with every story lies a whole of struggle; may it be physical or mental.
The struggle is there.

My personal favourite story line was that of the series which started after James, Abena , Akua , Yaw and Marjorie.
I was so touched by their tale of struggle.

Theme :

Though this book center’s around a major theme; that is of the racial differences which were there to an extreme level. Also, marking the world when Africans were but slaves in the eyes of white and how the world has turned now to Be.

But behind this themes lies a theme of life.
Life plays it’s game too well to loose. Until it is defeated by death.
A life creates life. And it is through these series of life that we generate a history, understanding the way we are today.

I highly recommend this book. With all my heart. This is a masterpiece.

“The family is like the forest: if you are outside it is dense; if you are inside you see that each tree has its own position.”
